Matt Clark - How I Started Kent Cabinetry

matt clark,owner of kent cabinetry

March, 2012 Kent Cabinetry really began many years ago when I had a construction company that specialized in restoration of old homes in Chestertown. Soon after graduating from Washington College in 1975 I started a construction company.
I found the need to recreate old moldings and cabinetry from days of old. As there was no cabinet or millwork shop in Chestertown it was difficult to serve my clients effectively.
I started to do the work myself. To do so I slowly bought the machinery and developed the skills required to reproduce the old style moldings and cabinetry. As a general contractor I remodeled many of the older homes in Chestertown.
This experience gave me a good knowledge of restoration work and was very helpful in understanding the problems involved with building and installing cabinets in homes. Because of my work in the building industry I had to develop a good knowledge of design.
The result of many years of restoration work is a very good sense of designing space and cabinets. We can design space to give maximum efficiency of space and give you design that reaches across the centuries.
In 1987 I hired an experienced cabinetmaker to help with our cabinet manufacturing. He taught me many things that enabled me to become a good cabinetmaker. He convinced me to purchase specialized equipment that made me competitive and increase our production.
He also introduced me to software designed for cabinetmaking. It was a Dos 2.01 version! I bought an 8088 computer for $5000 to run this software.
In 2000 we moved to Cross Street, Chestertown from the shop on Flatland Road and worked successfully here for eleven years.
In 2011 we constructed our new shop moving into it in the fall.
Over the course of the years we have created cabinetry for notable patrons as: Washington College, the Geddes-Piper House, The Walter's Art Gallery, the new Chestertown Visitor's Center, Chief of Naval Operations and many exclusive private homes in Kent County and on Water and Queen Street in Chestertown.
